Kirbyesque!

We’re observing what would be Jack Kirby‘s 94th birthday with our first gallery exhibition!

Kirbyesque will feature work from local artists Nathan Wirtz, Chris Sabatini, and Ryan Buck.  The event will run from 6-8 pm this Saturday (August 27th), right here at Danger Room.  The artists will be on hand to answer questions (and if asked nicely, would probably consider doing sketches for fans).  Refreshments will be served, and good times are sure to be had.  The art will be up on our walls for two to three weeks following.

2011 Olympia Comics Festival

The annual Olympia Comics Festival will take place this Saturday, May 21st.  The festival is not the traditional “comic-con” geared for superhero fans and collectors, but instead celebrates the art and creativity of comics and graphic novels.  The festival is family and “newbie” friendly and will offer lots of entertainment and excitement for anyone interested in the arts.

The festival will begin with a stage show at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE), continue with an expo and various panels at the Olympia Center (222 Columbia St NW), and conclude with the Guests of Honor signing and sketching at Danger Room Comics (201 W 4th Ave).

The stage show will begin at 11:00 AM (doors open at 10:30) and run until 1:00 PM.  The show will include short interviews with the Guests of Honor, a slideshow (with Dramatic Interpretation!) featuring some of the silliest moments in comics history, and at least one ridiculous contest.  In short, it is somewhat like a late night talk show if that show was devoted to comics.  The stage show is $5 at the door.

The expo at the Olympia Center will kick off at 1:30 PM and conclude at 6:00 PM.  This event is free to the general public.  Cartoonists from around the Pacific Northwest will be here displaying and discussing their comics.  This is a great opportunity to see the huge variety possible with the comics medium and do a little shopping as well.  For the complete list of exhibiting cartoonists, see the list here.

The expo will host various panels throughout the day.  Cartoonists Megan Kelso and Andrice Arp will take part in the “Third Wave Feminism In the Comics” panel exploring how modern feminism has affected comics.  Cartoonists Larry Gonick and Paul Chadwick will be on the “Using Comics For Education” panel discussing what is and isn’t effective.  Workshops will also be held for kids and adults who are interested in making their own comics.

Our Guests of Honor this year are Megan Kelso, Paul Chadwick, and Larry Gonick.

Kelso is the author of Queen of the Black Black, the Squirrel MotherArtichoke Tales, and editor of the all-women anthology Scherherazade.  She is a graduate of the Evergreen State College and has won both the Xeric and the Ignatz Award.

Paul Chadwick is best known for creating the character Concrete in a series of graphic novels.  Concrete may be the ultimate fusion of genre as it includes a half cup of science fiction, two tablespoons of the superhero and thriller genres, a big dollop of politics and three teaspoons of social commentary all tied together in a literary context.  Chadwick has also worked on several commercial properties in both film and comics.  Chadwick has won both the Harvey and the Eisner Awards for Best Artist and Writer.

Larry Gonick is the author of the famous Cartoon History of the Universe books.  In addition to history, Gonick has written and drawn several other books on such subjects as the environment, chemistry, and even sex.  He is the king of nonfiction comics! Gonick’s work balances humor and fact to create intriguing, hard to put down books. He has won both a Harvey and an Inkpot Award.

At 5:30 PM the Guests of Honor will be at Danger Room Comics for autographs and sketches.  Anyone wishing some one-on-one time with the cartoonists should take this opportunity to meet them.

Afterward, there will be a comics-themed art show opening held at The Northern (321 4th Ave NE) from 7-9 pm with contributions by several local cartoonists.

Free Comic Book Day!

This Saturday, May 7th, is Free Comic Book Day here at Danger Room(and across the country).  We’ll be handing out this year’s crop of FCBD comics at the store during our regular Saturday hours (11am – 7pm), and we’ll also have our agents distributing them out at the downtown library from 1pm – 4pm.

No, not every comic in the store is free on Saturday – that would put us out of business!  Every year the publishers choose select comic books to be included as part of this promotion.  The complete list is available here.  We also have two other titles we’ve ordered and are giving out that aren’t officially part of the promotion.  There will be lots of good titles to choose from, with a good range – some that will appeal to young kids, some to teens, and others to those suffering the pangs of adulthood.

It can’t hurt to get to the store early, but know that we have ordered more than twice the number of FCBD comics that were ordered at this store last year, so we should still have some left into the afternoon and evening.

Danger Room Awards (best of 2010) – winners

One of our plans when we took over the shop was to bring back the annual Danger Room Awards.  In years past, the shop held a yearly contest amongst our customers to vote on the best comics of the previous year.  Many of the big industry awards tend to have categories like best penciller, best inker, and so forth.  We choose instead to simply focus on what the best comics of the year were, broken up be genre.

The winners and runners up for the best comics of 2010 (as voted by our customers) are as follows:

Best Kids Comic: Yotsuba by Kiyohiko Azuma

Runner Up: Little Lulu by John Stanley, Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi (tie)

Best Classic Superhero Comic: Captain America by Ed Brubaker, Luke Ross, and Butch Guice

Runner Up: Batman and Robin/Batman Incorporated by Grant Morrison, Frazer Irving, and Yanick Paquette, Fantastic Four by Jonathan Hickman and Steve Epting (tie)

Best Modern Superhero Comic: Invincible by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley

Runner Up: Incognito by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips

Best Humor Comic: Axe Cop by Ethan Nicolle and Malachi Nicolle

Runner Up: Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Runner Up: I Am Legion by Fabien Nury and John Cassaday

Best Comics Non-Fiction: Footnotes In Gaza by Joe Sacco

Runner Up: How to Understand Israel in 60 Days Or Less by Sarah Glidden

Best Graphic Novel: Weathercraft by Jim Woodring

Runner Up: X’ed Out by Charles Burns

You’ll notice that , in some cases, we combined multiple titles into a single entry (Hellboy/BPRD, for instance).  This was done so as not to split the vote, and it seems that this was a decision worth making.

Featured Firsts 3/30/11

This week (3/30/11 – 4/5/11), we have two Featured Firsts: the new Venom series, from Marvel, and Sigil #1, by Marvel/CrossGen.

Venom #1 is written by Rick Remender (Uncanny X-Force, Fear Agent), with art by Tony Moore (best known as the first artist and co-creator of The Walking Dead).  This new approach casts Venom as a government special ops agent, and bonded to a new human host (Flash Thompson, former bully turned close friend of Peter Parker).  The debut of this character in Amazing Spider-Man #654.1 was entertaining, and with this creative team, we think this new series looks promising.

Sigil #1 is written by one of our favorites, Mike Carey (Unwritten, Lucifer), with art by Leonard Kirk (JSA, Supergirl).  This is a reboot/continuation of the series of the same name published from 200-2003 by CrossGen.  The long-ish story made short-ish behind CrossGen’s return is that Disney scooped up the rights to CrossGen’s comics when the company went under, and since Disney now owns Marvel, they’re giving some of their titles a second chance.  According to the advertising copy, though, these series are effectively being rebooted, so that one does not necessarily have to have read the previous incarnation to understand the new series.  Back to Sigil, though.  Mike Carey does the fantasy genre (or magical surrealism, as the case may be) extremely well.  His current series The Unwritten is one of our very favorite comics being published right now, and so of course, we’re curious to see how this series measures up.

As always, our Featured Firsts are 20% off during their first week on the rack.

Kids Books

One of our primary goals when making our plans for the shop was to create a dedicated kids section that would be easily identifiable and would showcase the quality and variety in the kids comics market right now. After lots of planning, some big shipments, and a good deal of reorganizing, the kids section is looking more or less like what we’d hoped it could be! There’s still some improvements we plan on making, but we’re pretty pleased for now.

Grand Re-Opening THIS SATURDAY!
